Serious question, hybrid poplar vs silver maple for a soggy back corner in Fargo?

I had to pick between a hybrid poplar and a silver maple for a low spot that stays wet till June, and I went with the poplar because it drinks water fast. Two years in, it has put on about 9 feet but every windstorm snaps a leader, and the silver maple down the block is still standing fine. If you deal with wet clay, what would you plant instead?
