Switched from a hand pruner to a bypass lopper for a big live oak job and it saved my forearms big time

I chose the bypass lopper over the anvil type after a buddy told me the anvil crushes live branches more, and the cleaner cut made the tree heal way faster has anyone else noticed way less cleanup with one style over the other?

I've been using a bypass lopper for years on live oak and honestly never thought about the difference in cut quality between the two types. I figured a cut is a cut, you know? But now that you mention it, the cleaner cut making the tree heal faster makes total sense. I've always just grabbed whatever lopper was closest, but I'm definitely rethinking my whole setup after this.

Yeah but the anvil will crush a live branch every time. Bypass is the only way to go for anything living. @the_jennifer you're overthinking it though, just grab the bypass one.

Oh man that's so true. It's like how everyone just grabs the first screwdriver or pan on the shelf without thinking about which tool actually fits the job, then wonders why things break or turn out bad.
