Warning: I was climbing wrong for years until a new guy in Boise pointed it out

I was doing a removal on a big maple in a tight backyard, using a standard friction saver setup I've had for ages. The new ground guy, Jake, who moved here from a big outfit in Oregon, quietly asked why I wasn't using a cambium saver on my tie-in point. I realized I'd been letting my rope just bite into the bark on every ascent, which is rough on the tree and my gear over time. Anyone else have a basic climbing habit they had to unlearn?

Honestly that's a scary thought. Makes you wonder what other little blind spots you've got up there. Good on Jake for speaking up instead of just watching. That's the kind of crew you want around.

Check your gear retirement schedule after a wake up call like that. Wearing out ropes on bark adds up fast in hidden costs. It's a good reminder to question your routine before the gear does.

What about the cost of your time checking it all?
