Spent three weeks digitizing old maps of a Roman villa in Spain. LIDAR caught 12 structures the hand sketches missed entirely. Anyone else finding older survey methods unreliable?

Did you run into any issues with the LIDAR data needing ground truthing to verify it? I had a similar experience mapping an old farmhouse layout where the 80s survey totally missed a whole root cellar the aerial stuff picked up. It is wild how much technology has changed the game for catching what people just walked right past back then.

Ground truthing is a must, especially with dense vegetation like olive groves that mess with the readings. I had to do a full walkover with a metal detector to catch a few small walls the LIDAR flagged as false positives. Once you cross-reference the data sets and adjust for that, the older maps basically become decoration.
