Found a piece of old pottery in my yard 6 months ago, and now I'm in an online fight about what to do with it
I dug up what looks like a piece of clay pot near an old creek bed on my property outside Athens, Georgia 6 months ago, and I posted photos to a few groups to get an ID. Half the folks say leave it exactly where you found it and just report it to the state, and the other half say keep it on your shelf since it was already on private land and nobody's checking. I get why scientists want context and all that, but does a single broken piece from someone's backyard really matter to the record, or am I just making excuses because I want to keep it?
