Just found out the Sutton Hoo helmet was actually found in pieces and reconstructed over years
I was reading a blog from the British Museum last night and it blew my mind. I always thought that iconic helmet was dug up looking exactly like the photos, but nope it was like 500 fragments. Took them decades to piece it back together. Makes me wonder how many other famous finds we see as 'perfect' are actually the result of insane restoration work. Anyone else stumble on a fact like this that changed how you see a museum piece?

Makes you trust nothing you see in a museum.

Totally get that feeling. It sucks when you realize something you thought was legit is totally fake.

That's wild, @kelly.charlie, I had the same moment when I learned about the Scythian gold comb from Ukraine. They found it snapped in six pieces and somehow restored it to look totally flawless. Made me realize half the stuff we stare at in glass cases is basically a giant jigsaw puzzle the curators solved over years. Lowkey makes me respect the museum folks way more now.
