That week in 2018 when we found the Roman coins under the parking lot

We were digging a test pit behind the old library in Bristol, expecting maybe some Victorian trash. On day three, one of the students's trowel hit metal, and we pulled up a whole pot full of denarii. It was over 200 coins, some from the reign of Hadrian. The whole site went quiet, then everyone just started grinning. We spent the next four days carefully mapping and lifting the find, and the local paper even came out. Does anyone else have a story about a find that just made the whole dig feel electric?

Remember that feeling when you find something perfect?

That quiet moment after a big find is the best part of the job (way better than the paperwork later). It’s like the whole team suddenly remembers why we’re out there in the mud. We had a similar thing with a single piece of samian ware that had a complete potter’s stamp. It wasn’t a hoard, but that one perfect object just connected us right to the person who made it. Those finds change the site from a grid of holes into a real place where people lived. The buzz sticks with you for the rest of the season.

Prefer the paperwork, honestly.
