The size of Cahokia really caught me off guard

I was reading a paper about mound building in North America and it said Cahokia had maybe 20,000 people at its peak around 1100 CE. That would've made it bigger than London at the same time, which I just never expected for a site in Illinois. I double checked it against a few sources because it seemed too wild, but the estimates keep lining up. The crazy part is how much of the original city is still buried under modern homes and roads in Collinsville. Has anyone else been surprised by how advanced or large pre-Columbian cities got before European contact?
