I used to hate widefield shots until I saw one in person

For years I thought nebula closeups were the only thing worth taking. Then I went to a dark sky site near Tucson last month and a guy showed me his Milky Way shot with Andromeda in the same frame and I finally got why people love those big views. Anybody else have a moment where a specific photo changed how you shoot?

That exact same thing happened to me out near Big Bend last year. I was all about zooming in on the Ring Nebula until a guy set up his rig and showed me one frame with the Milky Way core rising over the Chisos Mountains. It was like seeing the whole forest instead of just one tree, totally flipped my approach to what a good shot actually looks like.

I was in Sante Fe last fall and saw a print of the Milky Way arching over a whole desert landscape at a gallery. It made me realize how much context matters, like seeing the city lights on the horizon gave the stars this real sense of scale. That one shot convinced me to stop zooming in so much and just get the whole scene.

Funny you mention Santa Fe, a buddy of mine got chased by a javelina near there while trying to shoot the stars.
