My brother told me to try stacking photos for the Milky Way

He said to take about 20 shots of the same spot and blend them in free software like Sequator. I was out near Flagstaff last month and gave it a shot with my old DSLR. The difference was crazy, way less noise and you could actually see the dust lanes. Anyone have a good guide on how many frames is enough before you see a drop in quality?

I did about 30 frames for my last shot and it cleaned up great. After that, the extra time didn't really add much for me. Your brother's right, the noise just melts away.

Yeah, I learned that the hard way... spent a whole night stacking like 80 frames once, and the final shot looked pretty much the same as my 25-frame test. Felt like a real genius the next morning when I was half asleep. Guess I just like watching the progress bar move sometimes.

Classic case of overkill for no real gain.
