Some guy at a star party in Joshua Tree told me my Milky Way shot was "too clean," so I stopped using noise reduction
He said the smoothed out version looked like a painting and that he'd rather see the actual grain, so I turned off luminance noise reduction on my next 20 subs and now my stacked shots from Death Valley look like 800 ISO film and I honestly can't go back.
Why do people act like clean astro shots are a bad thing? I get wanting texture, but grain is not the same as detail. Once you stack enough subs the noise mostly cancels out anyway, so what is left is just the sensor doing its job. I have left some noise in my own shots before and never once thought it made them more real. Sounds more like that guy just wanted to feel superior about his own messy photos.
