Spent 45 minutes trying to fix a photo, turned out my lens cap was on

Last week I drove 30 miles out to a dark site near Joshua Tree, set up my tripod, and shot what I thought was gonna be an epic Milky Way panorama over the boulders. Got home, imported the files, and spent 45 minutes messing with levels, curves, and stacking before I realized every single frame was just pure black because I never took the lens cap off. Has anyone else wasted a whole night on something that dumb, or am I the only one who needs a checklist taped to my camera bag?

Wait until you've had one of those nights where you drive home thinking you captured the perfect shot and it was just a memory card that wasn't even in the camera. It's annoying, sure, but missing a lens cap probably saved you from wasting even more time editing something that wouldn't have been that great anyway. Isn't the real lesson that you should just check your gear before you leave the house?
