That time a park ranger showed me how to see the Milky Way

I was at a dark sky site in Utah 3 years ago, just kinda looking up at the stars with my phone camera. A ranger named Dave walked over and told me to put my phone away and let my eyes adjust for 15 minutes. He pointed out the exact angle to look, like 45 degrees above the horizon away from any city glow. After I did that, the Milky Way just popped into view like a giant cloud of light. I had seen photos of it on here for years but seeing it with your own eyes is totally different. Has anyone else had someone just change how you see the sky with a simple trick?

Man that ranger really knew his stuff, but isn't it funny how we spend so much time looking down at screens we forget our eyes have to adjust to see something that's always been up there?

Some of us need the screens just to figure out where to point our faces, @markh85. But then you spend 20 minutes scrolling through the app and by the time you look up, the sky's moved on without you. Guess that ranger would've just pointed up and said "it's right there, dummy" and saved us all a lot of trouble.

Yeah but @wood.faith, does it really count as looking down at screens if we're using them to learn where to even look in the first place? I spent years trying to spot the Milky Way from my backyard and never saw a thing until a stargazing app showed me exactly the right time and direction to glance up. Without that screen first I'd still be staring at a blank sky wondering what the big deal was.
