Changed my mind about using penetrating oil on rusted bolts after a brake job went sideways in Tulsa last month
Had a caliper bracket bolt snap off clean at 80 ft-lbs because I soaked it in PB Blaster for an hour, then a retired machinist told me to use a 50/50 ATF and acetone mix instead and I freed three bolts in under 10 minutes with zero drama, so has anyone else stopped trusting the spray can stuff?

Dude, that bolt snapping at 80 ft-lbs after soaking it in PB Blaster is a nightmare. I mean, I've had similar luck with the spray stuff just not doing much, so I get why you're looking for a better way.

Didn't you used to swear by PB Blaster? This bolt story has me rethinking that.

Yeah, I actually switched to Kroil a while back after reading a comparison someone did on a machining forum. They tested like 5 different penetrants on rusted bolts and PB Blaster came in dead last for how much torque it actually saved. I still use PB for light surface rust or quick jobs but for anything serious I go with Kroil or even a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone. That ATF mix is crazy good for the price, just gotta be careful with it around paint.
