Found out timing belt intervals are mostly made up by dealers

Was helping my buddy swap out the water pump on his 2005 Civic last Saturday and we got to talking about the timing belt. He said his dealer told him it had to be done every 60k miles or the engine would grenade. So I looked up the actual Honda service bulletin from 2004 and it says 105k miles for that motor. Blew my mind how much shops push that 60k number just to get more work. You guys ever run into fake maintenance schedules like that?

Same scam as "lifetime" transmission fluid that's dead at 60k.

Yeah absolutely. I just change my trans fluid every 30k to be safe.

30k is wild to me honestly. I had a buddy who did his Chevy Tahoe trans fluid every 20k like clockwork and that thing still died at 110k miles. @angela587 I guess it just depends on the car and how you drive it. My old Honda Accord I ran the same fluid for like 80k miles before it started slipping and I was kicking myself.
