Rant: Finally figured out why my brake jobs were coming back with noise complaints

Kept getting customers coming back after 500 miles with squealing brakes even though I cleaned everything perfect and used anti-seize on the slides. Then a older mechanic at the parts counter told me I was applying rotor grease wrong and showed me a 6 step process for just the rotor hat contact area. Has anyone else found that skipping the rust buildup removal on the hub face causes comeback issues?

Bro you mentioned the "6 step process for just the rotor hat contact area" - what exactly was step 4 or 5 that most people skip? I've been thinking maybe I need to wire wheel the hub face more aggressively but don't wanna mess up the wheel bearing.

Have you ever checked if your old rotor set screws were bottoming out in the hub before the rotor sat flush? That's step 4 nobody thinks about because they just crank them in and assume the rotor is tight. A quick test fit with the screws loose tells you if they're too long and pushing the rotor away from the hub face.

The thing about set screws bottoming out is a classic case of people trusting hardware more than they should. It's like when you're hanging a shelf and the drywall anchors are too long for the bracket, but you just keep cranking until the bracket distorts. Same principle applies to rotors thinking the screws are the final word on clamping force. The real issue is that we're so used to assembly being a one-and-done thing that we forget to check for interference fits. I've seen guys spend hours chasing a pedal pulsation that was just the rotor sitting slightly crooked because of a 2mm screw shoulder. Once you start looking for those hidden contact points, you'll see them everywhere in car repairs and home projects alike.
