Saw a guy at a shop use a strap wrench on an oil filter that was basically welded on

I was picking up parts and watched him fight a filter for like 20 minutes before he grabbed one and got it off in 10 seconds. Has anyone else had luck with those things on stuck filters or do they just slip half the time?

Last year I had a filter on my old Toyota that wouldn't budge no matter what I tried. Ended up using a strap wrench from Harbor Freight and it grabbed on pretty good after I wiped the filter down with some brake cleaner. Honestly it slipped once when I got too aggressive with it but I just repositioned and it came right off. Tbh I think they're hit or miss depending on how much room you got to work with and the condition of the filter. Ngl I'd take one over a filter wrench that just crushes the can any day though.

Got a nasty one off a Ford van last month that had been on for like 6 years. Strap wrench from AutoZone, same deal wiped it down with carb cleaner first. It slipped a couple times but I just cranked it tighter and it finally broke free. Ngl I swear by those things now, way better than destroying a filter with channel locks.
