That master tech ripped into my torque sequence and I changed everything

He watched me tighten down a cylinder head and said 'you're just chasing bolts around the deck' - been following the factory sequence to the letter ever since. Anybody else get humbled by a specific comment that stuck with you?

People get real dramatic about torque sequences. I used to just snug things down in a circle and send it, never had a head gasket blow out on me. If the bolts aren't rattling loose after a week, you're probably fine. The factory book is a nice guideline but chasing that exact pattern with a clicker wrench isn't gonna save you when the casting is warped.

Wait, so you're saying following the factory torque sequence is a waste of time? @kimmurphy and I had this exact argument last week. I've seen too many guys cheap out on that step and end up with a warped deck and a blown head gasket a month later.
