TIL the tick marks on my torque wrench are almost useless for small stuff
Last Tuesday I was doing valve cover bolts on a Honda K24 at my shop in Boise and the spec is 9 ft lbs. The marks on my old beam wrench start at 20, so I was guessing and stretched two bolts before I stopped. Bought a 1/4 inch inch pound wrench online for $52 and now I convert everything, 9 ft lbs is 108 in lbs and you can actually hit it. How do you guys handle specs down under 15 ft lbs without a $300 digital wrench?
What did the stretched bolts end up costing you, just the bolts or did the threads in the head get chewed up too? That is the part that scares me about guessing on small stuff, a stretched bolt is one thing but pulling threads out of an aluminum head is a whole other mess. And how are you liking that 1/4 inch wrench so far, does it hold its calibration after a few uses or did you have to send it out to get checked? Because I have been down this road with a cheap one before and it read fine at first then drifted on me after a couple months.
