PSA: Paid a broker $150 deposit and my car sat 9 days in Phoenix, then I booked direct with a carrier and it moved in 8 hours
I was moving from Phoenix to Austin last month and needed my Civic shipped. The broker quoted me $850 and promised pickup within 48 hours, so I paid the deposit and waited. Nine days went by, three different excuses, and nobody ever showed up. I got my deposit back after a fight and called a carrier directly, and they picked it up the very next morning for $780. Has anyone else had way better luck going straight to the carrier instead of through a broker?
The part people always skip is that brokers don't own a single truck, they just post your load on a board and hope some driver bites. When they can't fill it they don't lose anything sitting on their hands, but you lose days you can't get back. Direct carriers have their own trucks and their own schedule, so they either say yes or no right away instead of stringing you along. The catch is you have to do a little homework on who you're calling, because nobody is vetting them for you the way a broker claims to. Still, for a route like Phoenix to Austin where there's plenty of freight moving, cutting out the middle guy just makes sense.
