Heard a fresh apprentice say "the wires will tell you where they go" and I had to walk away

I was showing a new guy how to trace a fault in a 737 belly panel and he just blurts out that line from his A&P school. I stopped what I was doing and asked him what that meant to him. He said it meant just follow the wire colors and they lead you to the right place. I showed him a bundle of 40 identical white wires going into a connector with no markings. Asked him which one goes where. He just stood there staring. It took me 45 minutes to explain how to use the continuity tester and the wiring diagram for that section. He's green so I get it but that kind of thinking gets people killed or at least costs the airline 15 grand for a new LRU. Has anyone else had to explain to a new tech that the wires don't actually talk back to you?

Forty white wires and he thinks color coding will save him.

Nah I used to laugh at color coding too but honestly it saved me once.

And @spencer981, I just handed him a multimeter and told him to figure it out.
