Am I the only one who thinks the JMT is way overhyped for beginners?

I spent 10 days on the John Muir Trail last summer and the crowds at every camp spot drove me nuts. It took me 3 hours just to find a flat spot near Guitar Lake because of all the people. Has anyone else found a solid Sierra route that stays empty past August?

Guitar Lake was a TOTAL zoo when I went too. I actually USED to think the JMT was perfect for everyone until I spent a night there listening to people argue over tent sites. Now I'm all about the High Sierra Trail or just picking a random off trail route.

Holy crap, three hours to find a flat spot? That sounds like a nightmare.

Give me a nice flat patch of dirt and I'll still manage to find every rock and root within a 50-foot radius. My luck with setting up a tent is so bad I think the ground shifts just to mess with me. At least you got it done eventually, which is more than I can say for some of my past camping trips.
