Debate: I quit planning my backpacking routes down to the minute (you know, like obsessing over exact mile markers) and found more fun, but my buddy says it's asking for trouble. Where do you stand?

Yeah but going in totally blind sounds like a fast way to get stuck somewhere grim. I like a rough plan so I'm not wasting daylight or miles, leaves room for cool finds without the stress.

Man, I see this everywhere now. People treat their grocery trips like military campaigns with list apps and optimized routes. I started just wandering the store aisles last month and found three new foods I actually like. That same need to control every detail sucks the life out of road trips too. Sometimes the best stuff is the detour you didn't schedule.

There was a segment on the radio about how too much planning can strip the fun from simple activities. The host described a study where participants who avoided strict schedules reported higher happiness levels. They specifically enjoyed unplanned moments like trying a new restaurant or taking a scenic route. It seems letting go of control often leads to those small, pleasant surprises.
