Fork in the trail in the Smokies: took the 'scenic overlook' route up Chimney Tops, ended up crawling on my hands and knees through poison ivy for 2 miles. Totally worth it for the view but NEVER again.

Used to think hikes like that were overblown by people who just wanted a good story. Then I did the Alum Cave trail to Mt. LeConte in the rain last spring and ended up sliding down a muddy slope on my backpack for about fifty feet. Got a great view of a bear cub at the top though, so I guess it balances out. Learned my lesson about weather forecasts that day.

Used to roll my eyes at those stories but now I get it, something about nearly dying makes the view hit different.

Man that's REAL. I had a similar moment on a hike in the Smokies where a storm rolled in way faster than expected and I spent two hours shivering under a rock ledge, but the sunset that followed was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
