I think the AT is way overhyped compared to the PCT

I did the Appalachian Trail back in 2018 and everyone acts like it's the ultimate challenge. But honestly, I found it way more crowded and muddy than what I deal with now on the Pacific Crest Trail. The shelters were packed with mice and the trail was like a slippery trench in Vermont. Has anyone else found the PCT easier on their knees and sanity?

Agree completely - the AT feels like you're hiking in a muddy ditch half the time, and those PUDs in Pennsylvania beat my knees up way worse than anything on the PCT. @jana_jones nailed it about the views out west making the pain worth it, while the AT just gives you more mud and mice for your trouble.

Is the PUDs on the AT really that much worse than the endless switchbacks out west?

Ever tried counting switchbacks just to realize you've forgotten the number three times? PUDs are like nature's way of saying "you wanted a challenge, here's your brain turning to mush." At least out west you get a view while your knees file a formal complaint.
