My tent's main pole snapped in a windstorm on the Lost Coast Trail last month, so I used a length of paracord and a sturdy stick from the beach to make a temporary splint that held for the last two nights.

Has anyone else had to do a major field repair on a piece of gear, and what did you use?

Honestly, it's the same with everything now. You just have to make do with what you've got.

Did I ever tell you about the time my sleeping pad got a hole in the middle of the night... and I just stuffed my puffy jacket under me and called it a "custom lumbar support"? Worked great until I rolled over.

My own field repairs usually involve duct tape and a prayer, honestly.

Man, I used to be all about the right tool for the job. Then I saw @hall.joel's post about duct tape and prayers. It made me remember the time my truck's tailpipe was dragging. I had some wire and a crushed soda can. Wrapped it up with tape, mumbled "please hold," and drove it for a week. Sometimes the quick fix is the only fix you've got.
