Ran into a guy on the PCT who uses a hammock in the snow

I was taking a break near Muir Pass last September and this hiker named Dave rolled in with a hammock setup. I asked if he was crazy sleeping above 11,000 feet like that and he said his underquilt and tarp game keeps him warmer than any tent. He showed me his thermals and the way he angles the tarp for wind and honestly it made me rethink my whole kit. Has anyone else tried hammock camping in high alpine or is this guy just tougher than me?

Snow camping with a hammock sounds like a gamble to me.
