That $700 backpacking route in the Sierras I did last year is now basically a gravel road
I hiked the High Sierra Trail in 2023 and it was pristine single track but I went back this August and whole sections are washed out and turned into ATV tracks after those heavy storms. Has anyone else seen a route change THIS fast in just one season?

Bought myself a $200 "waterproof" GPS just to watch it short out on a drizzle last week... guess we both got burned on gear that couldn't handle reality. My old paper maps would've done better, though they'd be useless too with how fast this terrain is changing. Your trail story makes me feel less dumb about my purchase at least.

$200 for a waterproof GPS that can't handle a little rain, that's like buying a fireproof safe that melts when you sneeze too close to it. Paper maps may be outdated, but at least they don't need a warranty for a bit of drizzle.
