The old wooden sign at the Cascade Pass trailhead is gone, replaced by a metal one with QR codes
Hiked Cascade Pass in Washington last month for the first time in about 8 years. The weathered wooden sign that used to mark the junction is gone, swapped for a shiny metal one with a QR code and a mile marker table. Does anyone know when they started doing this on the popular routes?
The old wooden sign at the Cascade Pass junction was actually still there when I went up last September, so maybe they swapped it sometime over the winter or early spring. I remember it had that carved lettering worn down from years of rain and people running their hands over it. The metal ones with QR codes have been popping up on busy trails for a few years now, mostly at trailheads where they can track visitor numbers and push out alerts. Kind of a bummer to lose the character, but I get why they do it.
