Had to choose between sod and seed for my backyard in Kansas City

I spent two weeks going back and forth on whether to lay sod or plant seed on my patchy 800 square foot lawn. Ended up going with seed because it was $150 cheaper and I wanted to do it myself. It's been three weeks and the bare spots are filling in slow but steady, just hoping the July heat doesn't kill it all before it takes hold. Anyone else gamble on seed over sod and regret it or was I just impatient?

Bare spots and a hope prayer, that's my lawn care strategy.

Three bags of topsoil and a bag of grass seed are sitting in my garage from last spring. Still in the plastic, just like my good intentions. At this point I'm pretty sure my lawn is just going to have to figure itself out.
