Vent: Talking to my neighbor made me rethink my whole approach to raised beds

I was out back last weekend building a new herb garden and my neighbor Tom from two houses down came over. He mentioned he just uses plain old dirt from his yard mixed with compost from the city dump, no fancy bagged soil at all. It hit different because I've spent like $80 a season on those big bags from Home Depot and he gets the same results for free. Has anyone else tried just using native soil for raised beds or am I overthinking this whole thing?

Tom's got the right idea honestly. I did the SAME thing last spring and saved a TON of money. Native soil is fine as long as you amend it properly with good compost and maybe some perlite if it's heavy clay. The fancy bagged stuff is just overpriced dirt with some fertilizer mixed in. I'd say do a soil test first though, just so you know what you're working with. If your dirt is really sandy or rocky you might need to mix in some topsoil too.

Whoa yeah you just totally changed my mind on this. I was all about buying the expensive bags but now I'm thinking I've been wasting money for years.

Starts with a lightbulb moment for a lot of us once you step back and look at the bigger picture. It's the same with kitchen gadgets or workout gear - we get sold on the idea that expensive equals better. I remember buying a fancy spiralizer that just took up cabinet space for years. A good knife and a steady hand did the same job for free. Sometimes the best stuff is the simplest stuff you already have.
