A neighbor's offhand comment changed how I plan my patio layout

Last Saturday, I was out measuring for a small flagstone seating area in my backyard in Columbus when my neighbor Dave walked over. He saw my sketch with the fire pit dead center and said, “You know, everyone puts the fire pit in the middle, but you never actually sit around it that way unless there's a big crowd.” At first I brushed it off, but he showed me how he set up his own patio with the seating facing the garden and the fire pit off to the side, more like a backdrop. I sat down on my porch after he left and realized he was right. For two years I've been hosting maybe four people at a time, and we always end up clustered on one side anyway. So I redrew the whole thing to put the chairs at an angle toward the flower beds, with the fire pit tucked near the fence. Has anyone else shifted their layout after seeing how they actually use their space, or is the centered pit just too strong a habit to break?
