Doubted those no-dig garden beds for two years, finally tried one

I thought the whole layering cardboard and compost thing was a gimmick. Put in a 4x8 bed in my Phoenix backyard last spring, and my tomatoes went crazy compared to the tilled section. Anyone else have luck with no-dig here?

My own three raised beds in central Texas did the same. That cardboard layer really keeps the soil cooler here, I swear it cut my watering in half. Ever tried adding a thick layer of straw mulch on top too?

That struggle with soil temp is real, glad I'm not the only one seeing it. I did try straw mulch on top one year and it made a noticeable difference in how often I had to water. Have you noticed any pests hanging out more with the straw layer?
