Heard a guy at the lumber yard say paver bases need 6 inches of gravel minimum
I told him I've used 2 inches of crushed stone under my patio for 8 years and it's solid as a rock, no shifting or cracks. Anybody else think the 'bigger is better' rule for base depth is just selling more gravel than you need?

Honestly, 2 inches of crushed stone is plenty for a solid patio.

Last time I tried 2 inches I ended up with a patio that looked like a waffle after one winter. I swear I could hear the stones whispering "not enough" every time I walked on it. Now I just accept that I'm gonna overbuild everything and my back will hate me for it.

Ha! Sure, if you want it to crack by spring...
