My neighbor's concrete patio vs my gravel fire pit area
He spent like $8k on a poured slab that gets crazy hot and cracks every winter. I spent maybe $800 on a 10x10 gravel base with a metal fire ring from Tractor Supply. Mine drains perfectly, never gets too hot to walk on, and I can change the layout anytime. Why do people still go for big concrete pads when gravel is cheaper and works better? Anyone else ditch a hard patio for something more flexible?

Oh man, that reminds me of my old place! I had a tiny concrete stoop that heaved so bad one winter the door wouldn't open. Total nightmare. I ended up tearing it out myself and just putting down some big flat stones from the creek out back. It looked way nicer and never gave me trouble. Your story and what lee847 said about his buddy really shows how concrete can just turn on you. Gravel and simple stuff just seems smarter.

Concrete cracks and gravel drains" - throw a layer of landscape fabric under that gravel and you won't even deal with weeds either.

Remember my buddy who had that huge stamped concrete patio? He sold his house last year and the inspector flagged three major cracks with water damage underneath. The new buyers made him drop the price five grand to fix it. All that money just to end up with a headache.
