My neighbor's fire pit night made me rethink my whole patio layout

I was over at a buddy's place in Tempe last month for a simple cookout, and his whole setup just clicked. He had this simple gravel circle with a basic metal fire pit, surrounded by six Adirondack chairs he built himself. The whole thing was maybe 12 feet across, but everyone just naturally gathered there all night. I'd been planning this huge, expensive paver patio with a built-in kitchen for months. Seeing his cheap, cozy spot made me scrap my plans. Now I'm thinking of starting with just a gravel fire pit zone and adding on later. Has anyone else done a simple fire pit area first and been glad they didn't go big right away?

Gravel is a solid start, but it tracks into the house like crazy. I'd spend a little extra on a base layer of crushed granite underneath, it compacts better and keeps things cleaner. You can always add pavers over it later if you change your mind.

YO wait WHAT?? You're telling me you dropped big plans for a gravel circle and fire pit? That's honestly kind of wild but also I totally get it. @avery_flores17 out here talking about granite underlayment like it's no big deal but that's a game changer. I've had gravel kick up into my house for years and never thought about that fix. Makes me want to rip up my cheap setup and start over too.

We did gravel first, best decision ever.

My neighbor used granite underlayment and it made a huge difference. Way less mess in the house. Totally worth the extra step.
