My new paver patio started sinking after a heavy rain

I was in my yard in Raleigh and saw a corner had dropped almost two inches. I pulled up the pavers, added more compacted gravel, and it's been solid for six months now. Anyone have a better base material they'd recommend over gravel?

Ever try crushed stone instead of gravel? I had a walkway do the same thing and that stuff locks together way better, so it doesn't wash out. Good call on the fix though, @the_alice, it really is the worst surprise to find.

I mean, crushed stone can totally wash out too, it just depends on the size and how you lay it. The real trick is that compacted base layer underneath, idk maybe it's just me but I see people skip that step all the time. If that base isn't solid, anything you put on top is gonna sink eventually. Gravel or crushed stone, they both need a good foundation to sit on.
