My paver base was all wrong until I watched my neighbor do one pour

I spent 3 summers fighting sunken patio stones in Phoenix because I thought a little sand was enough under the big ones. Last April my neighbor redid his walkway with crushed rock compacted in layers and I finally saw my mistake, the base needs to be 4 inches of rock, not 2. Anyone else learn a basic step like that way later than they should have?
