Spent 3 years planning a koi pond and ripped it out last weekend
I had this whole elaborate koi pond design on paper since 2021. Big filtration system, plants, the works. Last month my neighbor showed me how much time he spends cleaning his pond algae and testing water. I did the math and realized I'd be spending like 4 hours a week on maintenance. Saturday I just dug it all up and put in a simple bird bath and some native shrubs instead. Anyone else totally change direction after doing the maintenance calculation?

Ditched my aquaponics setup after I realized tilapia get stressed if you look at them wrong.

You're giving up too easy... tilapia are sensitive but that's part of what makes the system work if you learn their habits. Keep the lights low, add some floating plants for cover, and don't hover over the tank like a predator. They'll settle down after a week or two of consistent routine. Every fish species has its quirks, you just have to work around them instead of expecting them to be bulletproof.

@dakota415 you gotta keep them in dimmer light and stop making eye contact. I switched to a recirculating deep water culture system after my tilapia started hiding every time I walked by. They're dramatic but the plants go crazy if you dial in the water chemistry right. Just treat them like moody teenagers and ignore them most of the time.
