The $8 bag of pea gravel made me rethink my whole drainage plan
I spent 3 weeks last spring leveling my backyard slope with a shovel and bubble level. Thought I had it perfect. Then my neighbor Mark came over while I was digging out a low spot near the shed and said 'you're just moving dirt, not managing water.' He pointed at where the downspout dumps and showed me how the runoff was pooling under the fence. Bought one of those little 50 pound bags of pea gravel from Lowe's for $8 and made a dry well in an afternoon. Turns out the real fix was catching the water before it hit the grass, not fighting the ground level. Now I'm wondering if I should rip out the retaining wall I built and start over with a French drain. Anyone swap out a solid wall for a gravel trench and regret it later?
