The one comment about my sod seam that flipped my whole plan

My neighbor said my grass looked like a patchwork quilt after I laid it myself in 90 degree heat last July... he was right, the seams were too tight and they cooked. Now I stagger the edges and water way more in week one, and honestly it looks better than the lawn company did for 3x the price. Anyone else get told something obvious that changed their install game?
