Was a skeptic on rain barrels for 2 years, now I'm hooked after seeing my water bill drop $15 a month. But my neighbor says they breed mosquitoes nonstop. Who's right here?

I finally installed two 55-gallon rain barrels from Home Depot last spring after my friend swore by them. My water bill dropped about $15 a month during summer watering, but my neighbor claims she found larvae in hers within a week. Has anyone dealt with the mosquito issue and still found it worth it?

Oh man, I gotta push back a little here! I've had rain barrels for three years now and never had a mosquito problem. You just gotta cover them right, like with a fine mesh screen under the downspout and seal the lids tight. Your neighbor probably has a gap somewhere or left hers open for a day. A little bit of mosquito dunk or a drop of vegetable oil on the surface kills any eggs too. Totally worth the $15 savings if you ask me!

Totally agree with @the_taylor, it's all about the setup. Funny thing, my buddy had the same complaint and it turned out his lid just wasn't snapping on all the way, he was leaving a little flap open. A roll of screen mesh at the hardware store is like five bucks and you're good for years. People just have to do the little things and it works perfect.

Right there with you @jason_lewis3. Same deal here - four years running and not a single mosquito issue. People skip the mesh and then blame the barrel, it's that simple.
