I finally stopped rewriting my first paragraph 12 times before letting anyone see it
Everyone in here posts these polished intros and asks for feedback on chapter 3, but the real problem is they never show the ugly stuff that actually needs eyes on it. Last Tuesday I posted 400 words of pure garbage about a bus ride in Akron and got more useful notes in an hour than I did from 3 months of quietly editing alone. Why do we treat the first page like it has to survive a test before it's allowed to be bad?
The "first page like it has to survive a test" thing is funny because most published first pages got rewritten a hundred times by editors anyway. Nobody's born with a perfect opener, and treating it like a sacred object just means you sit alone with a bad draft instead of getting help. Post the garbage, get the notes, move on.
