Rant: I paid $200 for a "world building" course that just told me to make a mood board
Figured it would fix my messy first draft, but all I got was 6 hours of videos saying "just write what feels right" and a PDF of prompts I could've googled. Anyone know a cheaper way to actually get feedback on a garbage draft instead of paying for vibes?
That $200 price tag stings, but I want to push back a little on the idea that a course was ever going to fix your draft. In my experience, no video or mood board or PDF can tell you what is wrong with your story because the problems live in the pages, not in your head. What actually helped me was swapping chapters with two other writers at the same level, we each read 20 pages a week and sent back notes, and honest notes too, not just "this is great, keep going." It was free and way more useful than any class because they were reading my actual words. Your mileage may vary, but a draft does not get less messy by learning about world building in general, it gets less messy by someone pointing at page 12 and saying they got lost.
