Hot take: The Room is a masterpiece and I will fight you on it
Watched The Room again on Friday with two friends who had never seen it. They wanted to turn it off after 20 minutes. I made them stick with it. By the end they were quoting lines and asking where to buy spoons. The movie is not good in a normal way. It is good because every single choice is wrong in a way that feels human. Tommy Wiseau spent $6 million of his own money to make a movie about his own life and somehow made a comedy. I think that is more interesting than most movies that try to be funny. Does anyone else have a movie like this where the first watch is painful but the second watch is amazing?
The spoon thing gets me every time because they literally just throw them at a framed picture of a spoon on the wall. But here is my real question: when you watch it the second time, are you laughing with Tommy or at him? The scene where he says "I did not hit her, I did not" on the rooftop, that felt like a guy working through something real, not a joke. So do you think he knew what he was making, or did the comedy come from him missing the mark so hard? Because that changes whether it is a masterpiece or just a happy accident.
