My film prof in Boston said Armageddon was garbage, then I watched it 4 times in one weekend
He spent 20 minutes in class tearing apart the physics and the drilling scenes, so I went home expecting to hate it and ended up loving every dumb second. Anyone else have a movie a smart person ruined for you before you even gave it a shot?
Watched my sister do the exact same thing with a book once, she tore it apart chapter by chapter for a class and I almost skipped it, then I read the whole thing in two days and loved it. It seems like knowing all the flaws ahead of time takes the pressure off, so you stop expecting some perfect masterpiece and just let the thing entertain you. Critics and teachers are trained to spot what's wrong, but that's not really why most of us watch movies in the first place. There's a real gap between a movie being well made and a movie being worth your time, and plenty of smart people can't see that gap. Sometimes the dumb stuff is the whole point, and the person pointing out every mistake is just missing the fun on purpose.
