Chose a $900 used Honda over a $400 Yamaha and I still second guess it
Had to pick between a used Honda generator and a Yamaha for my food truck, went with the Honda in May and it died mid-service at the Tuesday market. A guy there swore the Yamaha runs quieter and starts on the first pull every time. Did I just get a lemon or is the Yamaha crowd right?
The Tuesday market generator failure is one data point, and you are treating it like a verdict. Honda has been making small engines for over 70 years and they are the ones the rental yards run, because rental yards care about one thing: units that come back running. Yamaha makes a fine gen, no argument there, but "starts first pull" is a cold start party trick, not a measure of how it holds up under a food truck pulling 3,000 watts for six hours in July heat. You bought a used machine with unknown hours from some guy, and now you are blaming the brand for a maintenance history you cannot see. A carb clean and a valve adjustment would probably fix whatever killed it at that market, and that holds true for a Yamaha too. The loudest guy at the market is usually the guy who has owned exactly one generator and got lucky with it.
