Debate over my garage studio: should I soundproof with cheap foam or save for acoustic panels?

Last month I set up a recording space in my garage in Denver and bought $60 worth of foam tiles from an online shop. After recording three tracks, I realized it only killed the echo in one corner and left the rest sounding boxy. Has anyone here tried both and found one option that actually works better for spoken word stuff?

Wait, you dropped $60 on foam and it only fixed one corner? That's rough, man. Foam is basically a scam for killing real sound issues like boxiness and low end. Spoken word needs more mass and trapping, not just surface treatment.

Foam is basically a scam" Yeah. Maybe try moving blankets, cheaper and way more effective.
