Had a week where every shift went smooth and I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop

Last Tuesday I clocked in and every patient was stable, no call lights going off, even got a 30 minute break. Then Thursday a code was called on a guy who was fine ten minutes ago. Is a good week just setting you up for a bad one, or can you actually have a run of luck without it flipping?

Wait, can I push back on this a little? I mean yeah, a code right after a calm guy feels rough, but I don't think the universe is keeping score with you like that. A good shift is just a good shift, not a setup for a disaster. If you start thinking that way, you're gonna miss the good moments and just wait for the bad ones, you know? Stuff is random, and sometimes you get a lucky week, sometimes you don't. Don't give the quiet stretches this power over your head, man. You earned that 30 minute break, don't make it a bad omen.

Yeah, but "stuff is random" kind of falls apart when you start paying attention long enough. That's the thing I've noticed in everyday life, not just on the floor. It's like when you're driving and every light turns green for five blocks, then suddenly you hit a red that lasts forever. Or when you have a super smooth morning and your phone dies right when you need directions. It's not the universe keeping score, it's more like the calm is literally the pause before the storm. You don't get that quiet stretch without something coming to break it, and it's not a curse, it's just how patterns work. I've seen it at the grocery store too, the one empty checkout line always gets held up by a price check while the crowded lines fly by. So I hear you on trying to stay positive, but once you've lived through enough of those fakeout easy days, you can't unsee the setup.

Oh man, you just described my life perfectly. It's like every single time I have a day where everything just clicks, I get this pit in my stomach because I know something is about to go sideways. I've had mornings where I get to work early, coffee is perfect, paperwork is done in record time, and then out of nowhere a patient codes and it's chaos for hours. It's not just your imagination, it's a real pattern. You start to recognize the signs, like the universe is giving you a little too much rope before it pulls it tight. I've learned to appreciate those smooth stretches but I can't help bracing for the other shoe to drop. It's like a reflex now, you can't unsee it once you've noticed it enough times.
