I swore for 6 weeks that my neighbor's maple was killing my gutters, then I finally climbed up there
So back in April I noticed water pooling near my foundation after every rain. I was dead sure the huge maple next door was dumping leaves and seeds into my gutters. I told anyone who'd listen, including my wife, that this tree was the problem and the neighbor should pay to trim it. I even drafted a passive aggressive text twice before deleting it.
Finally my wife got tired of it and said just get on the ladder. Took me 10 minutes. Gutters were basically empty. The real issue was a cracked downspout elbow from the winter, water was running right down the side of the house instead of away from it. $12 part from the hardware store on 5th.
So I spent almost two months blaming a tree that did nothing wrong. I still feel like a jerk for how I talked about the neighbor, even though I never sent the text.
Anyone else ever build a whole case against the wrong thing before actually checking?
Man, I did the exact same thing with my mailbox last summer. Mail kept getting soaked and I was sure the mail carrier was just cramming it in wrong or leaving it open in the rain, so I called the post office and complained twice. My wife finally said just stand out there during a storm and watch, so I did, and turns out the little rubber seal on the door had dried up and cracked and water was running right in through the top. A three dollar strip of weather seal from the hardware store fixed it. The part that got me was how much time I spent mad at a person who had nothing to do with it. Now when something breaks I try to actually look at it first before I start pointing fingers. What did your neighbor say when you told him, or did you even bring it up?
